Nothing is happening within people that was not happening before. But with the information revolution, there is a sort of cultural commons now. I am reminded of the line from the movie Primer, "They took from their surroundings what was needed and made of it something more." I think your answer is in that line. The destructive elements of culture evolve alongside the creative, borrowing from their surroundings in similar fashion, and today we have previously unheard of resources to draw upon. It is that much less likely that anything will remain isolated.

I predict this one will be ignored by the general media and quickly be swept under the rug. German school shootings? Not news, not enough public hatred fueled to be worthy of the major news networks.
Actually in Britain it is a lead news item like several others that have taken place in Europe in recent years. This sort of thing sells a lot of airtime whenever it happens in a developed country.

You mean there is selection bias on Wikipedia?

I was not, because it had already happened several times previously. When I saw it on the news, my reaction was "Oh, another one. Wow, mega bodycount this time. That will be a hard act to follow." Most people think the phenomenon began that day. It did not. Maybe a certain movie helped that false perception along. I bet the killers would be flattered though.

Of course, but normality is a relative thing. Some guy taking a car and spraying bullets around the streets before a stand-off with police is news in the US and EU, but when it happens in South Africa, it is a case of "that's not news, you would expect it to happen over there." That is the way we evaluate these things.

There is undoubtedly media hype, but there are also differences in perceived value.

Uh...
I think it is just a mental health issue. It seems he had received some treatment. Figures. If something like that is going to materialise in a person, it usually shows up in their late teens or early twenties. It is like a developmental hurdle, most make it, some don't.
